Seasonal Fruit Guide

Once you've figured out a diet high in fruit is the key to true health, typically the next most important variable is understanding when to eat it. Below I will list how my diet shifts throughout the year depending on what fruits are in season. Keep in mind this information is best suited for those living in the United States considering different areas of the world have different growing seasons. Also keep in mind the growing season can be slightly different from state to state. I've taken what I've learned after multiple years of experience eating fruit and listed my main go to fruits for each month below.

Year Round Fruits (Staples)

I feel it is important to name a few fruits that are year round staples of mine before I dissect which ones are available a bit more exclusively month by month. Bananas are often referred to as the foundation of the raw vegan lifestyle. Not only are bananas available year round, but also they are very affordable. Be sure you bananas are brown and spotty before you eat them!

Another year round staple of mine is the Avocado. The high demand for avocados in the U.S. has pushed it to become a year round fruit. Avocados are wonderful for those starting to transition away from the Standard American Diet to a cleaner lifestyle. I use Avocado in many of my raw vegan recipes because they provide just the right amount of satiation. I'm always down for some fresh guac.

Coconuts are one of my favorite foods for building the body up. Coconut meat has a complete amino acid profile and is just delicious. Not only do coconuts provide a very balanced energy supply for the body, but also the water is so sweet/hydrating especially from the young thai varieties.

Papaya is another one of those fruits that has a peak season in early Summer/Fall but can also be found year round. I find most people don't like papaya at first. It's one of those foods that grow on people, so give papaya a chance! It ends up becoming a staple for many fruit eaters! After a while on a fruit diet your taste buds definitely change! See if you can get your hands on strawberry papaya for an extra special papaya experience : )

For my Florida friends, it's worth mentioning that the Mamey Sapote is available mostly year round down there. Different varieties peak at different points during the year, but south Florida is the place to be if you enjoy this sweet pumpkin pie tasting fruit. Mamey Sapote is easily one of my favorite fruits!

Last, but definitely not least on our list of year round fruits, we have the Apple. Although apples have a peak season in the fall, they are widely available year round. You should do your best to be selective about eating apples outside of the fall because a lot of the time they will sit in a factory somewhere for an extended period of time. This is because they are shipped in massive quantities all around. Aim for organic because they are often heavily sprayed with pesticides.
